Dance and Crisis

Encounters and Exchange

With Ricardo de Paula, Sophia Neises, Ralf R. Ollertz, Moritz Ostruschnjak, Matilda Marina
Host: Dr. Mariama Diagne

The pandemic is leaving social, personal and political traces and making lasting changes. For the contemporary dance scene in particular, which has always operated internationally, closed borders and the impossibility to travel and tour mean major alterations to familiar ways of working. The performing arts – especially dance – are characterised by the encounter, real presence and movement of bodies in time and space. At any rate almost no one questioned this prior to 2020. Yet the impossibility to meet one another physically has brought about artistic formats and strategies that occasionally provide new access and means of expression.

We invite you to examine this time of global bewilderment: What situations did artists and dance-makers find particularly burdensome or difficult? Which new formats and artistic approaches will endure? What opportunities and contradictions are contained in digital choreographic work? How can international connections be maintained during the pandemic?
